Bark Back at GGNRA by December 9

Friday, December 9, is the last day to weigh in with public comments on the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Draft General Management Plan, which will affect, among other things, Fort Funston, Muir Beach, Rodeo Beach and other spots beloved by DogTrekkers for many years. (This is not the same thing as the dog management plan about which the GGNRA solicited comments earlier this year.)  Ocean Beach Dog offers an excellent summary of the issues and suggestions for your own comments. For those in a hurry, Save Off-Leash has handy copy-and-paste comments!

Mayor Lee Says No to GGNRA

At first bark, the Sharp Park golf course and the National Park Service's bid to acquire it from the City of San Francisco wouldn't seem to have much to do with DogTrekkers, but there you'd be wrong. Even aside from the fact that apparently the park's perimeter is  popular with dog walkers. The City has been considering the Park Service's bid, but the Park Service unabashedly admits that its taking possession of the place would be the end of golf, and indeed much in the way of recreational activity, as it pursued an agenda of restoring the golf course's environment to a state ostensibly reflective of some natural reality before humans arrived. "Wilderness restoration" rules the day at the GGNRA, in contrast to its recreational mandate.

Happy New Year 2012

Kayla, DogTrekker’s Research Lab, took her first DogTrek of the year on New Year’s Day hiking with buddy Kiya along the actual Emigrant Trail. After following the Old Reno Road (just outside of Truckee) for a few miles, the two pups and their uprights appropriately turned onto Dog Valley Road for their hour and a half jaunt.

A Bark for the East Bay Parks Directors

Four of the East Bay's largest dog owner groups made the East Bay Regional Park District's Board of Directors sit up at the Board's meeting on December 20, 2011 when they presented a request to preserve Ordinance 38 (the policy that allows dogs to be off-leash in most undeveloped areas) and acknowledge people with dogs as a user group on Albany Beach. They also presented 10,000 signatures of people who support off-leash recreation in the East Bay. The dog pack included Albany Landfill Dog Owners Group, Lamorinda Dogs, Oakland Dog Owners Group and Point Isabel Dog Owners Group. Several members of the public also testified in support.
