Cuddle up With Your Pup in Mendocino County

Mendocino County isn’t day-trip distance from any metropolitan areas, which, for DogTrekkers, means you’ll want to cuddle up with your pup at a dog-friendly lodging establishment. We’ve got lots of suggestions, which you can peruse here. Meanwhile, we’ve cherry-picked a few of our favorites.

Talk about social distancing….If seclusion is your thing, the architecturally stunning, modern cottages managed by Sheep Dung Properties in rural areas of the county are calling your name. Long Valley Ranch, part of an 800-acre spread on the Boonville-Ukiah Road, offers three cottages sleeping two to six people and their canine companions, while The Other Place, on a ridge outside of Boonville overlooking the Anderson Valley, has four cottages in an equally tranquil setting.

Bring groceries, bring books, bring your hiking shoes, shed the face masks and prepare to explore and relax. Both properties are fenced for your dog’s safety, and she’ll enjoy seeking out scents and experiences not available at home.  And if you need to be closer to civilization, Sheep Dung has a cottage in downtown Boonville, too.

If you come to Mendo for the ocean, and want to park yourself and your gang  within sight and sound of the sea, the Beachcomber properties in Fort Bragg are your cuppa kibble. The Beachcomber Motel itself is a luxury property that offers panoramic views, fire pits and “pet suites” (rooms that open onto a deck with dog house and pet shower) with direct access to the property’s leash-free dog park.

Nearby, the pet-friendly, 30-room Beach House Inn is just a 500-foot walk from the shore and comes with many amenities, including soaking tubs for two. So close to the sea you’ll be lulled to sleep by the shushing surf, is Surf & Sand Lodge, walking distance to Fort Bragg as well as water’s edge.

If a B&B atmosphere is more your style, look no farther than Little River Inn, where coastal history and natural beauty meet. This perched-above-the-ocean sanctuary features water views from all rooms, and many have fireplaces and whirlpool baths. The inn provides designated leash-walking areas, cover sheets for furniture, food and water bowls and other amenities.

Another great bet: Stanford Inn Historic Farm & Eco Resort, whose decades-old commitment to four-legged family members means your pup will get a warm welcome, dog sheets to protect furniture and many other amenities. Guest rooms and suites are loaded with amenities, too, and Ravens Restaurant, known throughout the state for vegetarian cuisine, much of it sourced from the inn’s certified organic gardens. Ask and ye shall receive dog-friendly guidance on activities from hiking to beaches and area attractions.
