For A Personal Touch, Go For the B&B Experience

Sure, you can be traditional and stay at a dog-friendly hotel or motel during your Tuolumne County getaway, but the choices don’t stop there. Bed-and-breakfast inns, Airbnbs and traditional vacation rentals offer options with a more personal touch. Here are some DogTrekker favorites.

If you’re a fan of luxury inns, McCaffrey House B&B is calling your name. This AAA Four-Diamond property in Twain Harte is romantically furnished with Amish quilts and luxury linens, plus modern amenities like docking stations and high-speed internet. Guests and their four-legged friends can meet and mingle over the full hot breakfast or evening happy hour that bookend the day.

Yosemite Rose B&B near Groveland is a three-part property. There’s the Manor, a traditional (but not pet-friendly) inn; the Cabin, which sleeps six; and, for groups of up to 12, the Ranch House, a 3,000 square-foot, dog-friendly vacation rental surrounded by 200 acres of pasture with grazing cattle. Great for kids, dogs, family reunions and just relaxing, it’s also just 19 miles from Yosemite National Park.

Baretta Gardens Inn B&B in Sonora is a pet-friendly Victorian farmhouse with parlors, porches, a lovely garden, Jacuzzi soaking tubs and rainfall showers. Rates include a full breakfast and early coffee delivered to your room. Pets are welcome in rooms with private entrances.

Traveling with a group? Lillaskog Lodge, 11 miles from Yosemite, is a mountaintop vacation rental with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and some of the best views in the area. Many a wedding and retreat is hosted here, and up to 18 guests (not counting dogs) can be accommodated overnight.

Union Hill Inn in Sonora is a pet-friendly B&B/event center situated on 50 history-rich acres laced with trails for dog-walking or running. “Rustic and refined” are the keywords here. Five suites and three cottages accommodate as few as two guests or as many as six, but only on Tuesday and Wednesday nights (the other days of the week are reserved for weddings and other events). The dog-welcoming property encompasses a wedding chapel, various event pavilions, gardens and a pool, and is well located for excursions into the surrounding Gold Country.
