Conquer Concord with your pup

Looking for a new, not-faraway place to explore with your dog for a day or a weekend? Think Concord— and bring your appetite and your hiking shoes. You’ll need them both in this East Bay city at the foot of iconic Mount Diablo. Settle in for a night or two at the dog-friendly Hilton Concord, certified “Clean & Safe” in light of the fading Covid-19 pandemic.

You’ll be totally comfy, and your dog will get some nice amenities, too. A bonus: the 33-mile Iron Horse Regional Trail runs adjacent to the property.

Other dog-friendly lodging choices include the Concord Plaza, Clarion and Best Western Heritage Inn, all of which will assure that your four-legged guest is as welcome as you are. (Be sure to check weight and breed restrictions before you book, as some allow only small dogs.) Also, note that Concord prides itself on being a proactively ADA-accessible city. All hotels offer ADA-accessible rooms, while many parks and open-space preserves feature wheelchair-accessible trails.

Any way you slice it, this Contra Costa County town is just ball-throwing distance (well, almost) from Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento. Convenient, in other words. The birthplace of jazz great Dave Brubeck and actor Tom Hanks boasts a booming craft brew scene, a thriving music scene, creative dining options and quick access to thousands of acres of open space laced with dog-friendly hiking trails.

Todos Santos Plaza is the town’s nucleus, an inviting, 2.5-acre community gathering space that hosts many events, from farmers markets to live music and festivals. Bring a picnic or visit one of several surrounding restaurants and taprooms that welcome dogs at outdoor tables. Visit Concord offers a listing of al-fresco dining options here. Some our faves include Hop Grenade (prime location on the plaza), Lazy Dog, Concord Tap House, Epidemic Ales, Lima and Grant Street Pub & Pizzeria (just a block from the square).
