The saying goes, a little friendly competition never hurt anyone, and in the case of the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K challenge, competition can be extremely beneficial, especially for shelter animals. On August 1, 2012 the Marin Humane Society started the 100K challenge. This competitionwas started to help raise the number of shelter animals adopted or reunited with their guardians. By creating a competitive atmosphere shelters and communities are inspired to go above and beyond for the animals. The MHS’s goal is for 1200 animals to find forever homes before October 31, 2012. So far the Marin Humane Society has seen 156 animals adopted and 91 reunited with their guardians.
The Marin Humane Society is one of 50 shelters nationwide who made it into this round of the challenge. While the ultimate goal is to find homes for as many animals as possible, there is a grand prize of $100,000, which will be awarded to the shelter who increases their adoption by the greatest percent. Smaller monetary prizes will be awarded as well.
Now in it’s 3rd year the challenge strives to save more and more animals each year. Last year contestants saved a total of 52,484 lives in 92 days and this year is shaping up be record breaking.
