The Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County got its start when a benefactor decided the county needed an animal shelter between Willits and Ukiah. She donated money for the purchase of property in Redwood Valley, where the shelter opened its doors in 1993 and has been expanding ever since.
Currently, HSIMC cares for about 30 dogs and 20 cats, among them Hazel, a harrier hound about 6 to 8 years old found wandering the countryside with her daughter (since adopted). Notable for her gregarious ways and her endearing underbite, Hazel needs a home with other dogs to keep her from getting bored and following her nose yet again to parts unknown.
