The call came in to Leave No Paws Behind — a young husky, barely a year old, had landed in a high-kill Southern California shelter in such rough shape that they were going to euthanize her immediately if rescue didn't turn up. No way, said LNPB founder Toby Wisneski, AKA Ms. Toby, and Miracle was soon safe and getting vet care. Now, much revived from her sad state, Miracle is headed for her forever home.
It's been quite a year for LNPB, as it continues its much-needed work of rescuing senior and special-needs dogs. Like Rambo, now an internet celebrity, who was in a terrible state of neglect and suffering from raw, bleeding skin inflammation all over his body. Rescued by LNPB, he was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder pemphigus, and after months of treatment is ready for a new and better life.
Or the 11 dogs and 5 cats LNPB recently took in from Texas shelters in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. In many cases, these were critters who'd languished in shelters for months, sometimes years. "In six weeks, we got them all treated and into homes," says Ms. Toby.
"It's nonstop, but we're happy we're able to do these things," she adds. She notes that it's a large network of supporters, donors, friends in the Southern California community, and especially the kind souls who take these dogs into their own homes to recover and await their new families that makes it all possible. "Rescues rescue, fosters save lives," says Ms. Toby, and if you'd like to be one, get in touch!
