Marin County it’s been said, has a larger population of dogs than of children. Whether that’s urban legend or fact, residents are definitely known to dote on their four-legged family members. When you bring your family to Marin, you’ll live like a local, enjoying many family-friendly hikes and beaches. We also have found some very “local” dog- and kid-friendly venues for you to check out.
Parents in the know pop their tots in the stroller and leash up their dogs for an excursion to Marin Country Mart in Larkspur, about 15 miles from downtown San Francisco. This village-style shopping and dining haven in a park-like setting is more than a mere collection of stores and restaurants. Talented artist and entrepreneurs ply their trades here, and families enjoy complimentary activities like pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, face-painting, storytelling and live music. The Saturday Farmers Market draws more than two dozen local farmers selling locally grown produce. On Sundays, Off the Grid food trucks cruise in for the largest such gathering in Marin.
Another much-loved, family-friendly venue in Marin is Terrapin Crossroads, an indoor-outdoor San Rafael music and restaurant venue founded by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Its waterfront Backyard area is kid- and dog-friendly, offering bocce courts, play structures, food, beverage, the occasional “yappy hour” and frequent outdoor concerts. Lesh and his band play frequently, and you never know who else will pop in. Doesn’t matter: It’s a sure bet that kids, parents and dogs of all ages will love it!
